About this test

7 min to complete
Available in EN, ES, RU

The graduated driver’s license program in Illinois is designed for minors, specifically those ages 15 to 17. If you’re between those ages, you’re eligible to, firstly, obtain a permit by passing a written knowledge test. Then, you’ll be required to hold the permit for a minimum of nine months while you complete a driver’s education course and 50+ hours of supervised driving, after which you may test for your driver’s license. To begin the graduated license program, you’ll need to pass the written knowledge test that contains 35 multiple-choice questions based on information that is pulled from the 2024 Illinois Rules of the Road. The test requires you to answer at least 28 of the 35 questions correctly to pass and be eligible for your permit. Once you’ve passed the test at your local SOS office, you’ll also be required to take a vision test, provide the required paperwork, and pay a fee. Your instruction permit will have a $20 fee, and if you’re over 17 and applying for your license, you’ll pay a $2-30 fee for your physical license depending on your age and the length of time your license will be valid. At the SOS office, you’ll need to present proof of identity, residence, and signature, as well as proof you have completed or enrolled in a driver’s education course.
