About this test

6 min to complete
Available in EN, ES, RU

Knowledge of Illinois’ fines and limits will be an important part of passing your written exam and becoming a safe driver. The test, as a whole, will be 35 multiple-choice questions, and you cannot miss more than seven if you want to pass the test and move on towards an instruction permit or driver’s license. In addition to passing the written knowledge exam, you’ll need to take a vision test, and prove you’ve either completed or enrolled in an approved driver’s education course. You’ll also need to provide proof of identity, residence, and signature, as well as pay the $20 fee for your permit, or $2-30 fee for your license. While the written test to get your instruction permit or driver’s license will be based on the entirety of the 2024 Illinois Rules of the Road, this SOS practice test will focus only on chapters 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8. These chapters examine, in depth, topics like traffic fines, driving under the influence, limits, and restrictions associated with the Illinois graduated driver license program. This is one of the most important practice tests, since questions about fines and limits are some of the most difficult on your knowledge exam and require remembering facts and figures. If you’re not able to pass the written exam on your first try, you may come back the next day to retake it, but you will only be allowed three attempts to pass within one year.
